Remarkable piece, both in its brevity and in its insight. I remember in one of his books, Dalrymple quotes from the journal of the Marquis de Custine, praising him for being able to learn about a society even from the walls of its buildings.
At the time I got the impression that Dalrymple very much admired the Marquis’ skill, and sought to emulate it. Pieces like this make me think that he has more than equalled him.
