Why the Left Just Can’t Get to Grips With ‘Englishness’

Dalrymple in the Express:

ED Miliband’s recent speech in which he tried to rehabilitate Englishness in the minds of his supporters illustrates the Left’s perennial difficulties with patriotism and national identity, particularly when they are English.

The Left doesn’t like them because they weaken the class antagonism upon which their own potential power depends.

But there is no doubt that there is a problem with Englishness in a way that there is none with Welshness or Scottishness.

Hmm.. I’ve not followed TD’s comments on football. For my part I not infrequently use facilities in a place that often televises football… I wouldn’t really mind, let them get on with it blah blah… but then their team scores a goal and the sudden release of a rapturous roar is more than my pathetic nerves can take.

Actually being somewhat intemperate I’m a little concerned it might someday get the better of me and I’m going to walk up to the big screen switch it off and f**king lay into them… I don’t really mind football but I absolutely HATE that!!!
