Let’s not beat ourselves up over masochism

Here’s a topic I certainly can’t remember Dalrymple having addressed before: masochism.  (H/t Colin)

More than one patient in my medical career gave her profession as dominatrix. Some found their clients among the lower classes, and some among the upper. Those who flogged the lower orders tended to be older, smaller, weaker and less pretty; those who serviced the upper were beautiful in what might be called a strapping way.

One even had an international clientele: she would travel the world to whip judges and other members of the local establishment or intelligentsia. Whether the fact that she had flown in from thousands of miles away added to the sexual excitement she provided, or whether she was in demand for her special skills, I cannot say; but to judge by her address, she made a good living. She kept a bag of equipment ready at all times for immediate – emergency? – departure.

….

In any case, if people want to be flogged, why not? The dominatrixes (or is it dominatrices?) who were my patients added to the pleasure of the world, and one of them even contributed to our balance of payments.

You don’t believe any of this, do you?

If it is true then it probably equally applies to semi-competent NHS psychiatrists and their more talented, dynamic brethren who populate Harley Street.

Louise, you’re coming across as slightly obsessive, and more than a little paranoid. Have you sought help for these problems? These days there are things they can do, tablets you can take etc.

Granted, I doubt he kept track of the ages, heights, weights and attractiveness, grouped by the class of their clients, of his dominatrix patients. But he is probably remembering it as best he can, however imperfectly it may or may not be, and I am willing to make allowances, due to the simple impracticality involved, for his inability to buttress his every assertion with the results of some double-blind study he supposedly should have conducted on these matters before drawing any conclusions.

No, just Catholic. Soft porn in The Telegraph :! I never thought I would see the day.

Now, if you don’t mind I feel slightly tainted after having read that. So I’m off to Confession (therapy on the cheap) to say two million Hail Marys.

Oh, and about the tablets. I stopped taking mine when Dalrymple Implied that psychiatry is bunkum, designed to placate malingerers so I threw them all into the sea.
