It sounds like he’s been in therapy for his misanthropy. Either that or he’s had one too many sherries over Christmas.
That’s an oddly reproduced article, lower case i’s? No way can that be in the original, surely not!
Anyway, more on topic… there’s a cafe I regularly go to and the staff, mainly young women (and mainly eastern European), are usually very pleasant, and they seem genuinely so.. they seem, if I understand correctly, to have what Jane Austin called self-possesion.
I’m actually rather fortunate, in spite of my no doubt misanthropic inclinings on this blog… these days most people in my life are very agreeable.
No great mystery, a moderate Christian upbringing has been for the most part an exceptionally good guide; I pretty much know where I’ve failed and where others fail.
